The AS WAS series began as a self-referential exercise, painting from painting whilst stripping colour. As achromatic image was explored further, black and white diagrams in art publications became an inspiration. The mesh allows the painting to become monochromatic, an adds a fine texture and detail akin to half-tone dots.
The visual experience - online versus in person - is a theme that runs through Beard’s practice. In the AS WAS paintings there is a special colour changing quality that can only be experienced in person, by viewing at different angles. Online viewing means the veil is read as a colour drench, a digital layer.
