Whack
Oil on canvas
165 x 105cm
(2025)

Whack is a reaction to Beard’s previous hard-edged abstract paintings, post-monoline.
The gestures and consideration of space remain the same, but Beard wanted to create objects with weight, which use scale differently. This work invites the viewer to have a more intimate experience, and have a clear sense of scale in relation to themselves in the physical world. This is a conscious contrast to the flatness and apparent digital scale of Beard’s other bodies of work.
Beard often employs obstacles as part of their practice, purposefully creating difficulties to foster interruptions to the automatic drawing and dissociative process. Whack uses repetition to this effect.
